Executive & Anchor Sandra Rupp reports on THE WAY AHEAD ~ for State Street, McCann, Alfa Romeo, Audi, Unilever, WPP CEOs.

Today I’m offering strategic advertising advice to Jay Hooley, CEO of State Street global financial services and Harris Diamond, CEO of McCann, a top ad agency owned by Interpublic. FT Alphaville had an insightful post on that “Fearless Girl” Statue they placed standing in front of the famous Wall Street Bull for International Women’s Day. While I give all CEOs credit for taking on the complex topic of gender parity, in this case the marketing teams tried to tie this publicity stunt to a communications message to influence companies to appoint more women to their boards. I immediately hit the FT comments button, as I was shaken State Street and their ad agency were tying women on boards to a statue of a little girl. Why? Well predictably the press scrutinized the % women in leadership at State Street (reminded me of the Audi Super Bowl ad controversy), and I don’t think any of this helps get more women on boards today: the rest is HERSTORY. Jay and Harris, I invite you to call me for expert advice. Let’s replace the little girl statue with a statue of a businesswoman in high heels with a businessman standing next to her (Yin/Yang). I would love to work with you! I helped reinvent the Unilever Axe & Dove Ads and influenced Sir Martin’s CEOs to put more women Creative Chiefs at WPP agencies. P.S. Alfa Romeo, after your inspiring, feminine energy Super Bowl Ads, you are my next car purchase! Watch the full report here:

“Introducing the priceless Sandra Rupp.” FT Alphaville

Each morning I wake up to my Financial Times alerts on my smart phone to see headlines about my favorite CEOs. About ten days ago, I almost fell out of bed….There was a story in FT Alphaville (founded by the talented Paul Murphy) about Unilever stock and something going on with Kraft Heinz. As a world’s top business thinker, the first thing I did was head for my laptop and Twitter where I can read headlines of 25+ global publications. Next I was on the phone to a friend at a top hedge fund in New York asking him to tell me more about private equity firm 3G. Interestingly Warren Buffett helped my Dad find his CEO job back in the ’70s. I had even consulted to companies like Cadbury. I had to work fast, I had to take my comments to the FT, and I had to get creative because CEO Paul Polman and his visionary Sustainable Living Plan are worth everything we’ve got! He is my favorite CEO in the world, an innovator like no one else: irreplaceable and highly regarded by other Davos CEOs (and Executive Coaches). And the rest is Herstory: Yes FT Alphaville, Sandra Rupp, CEO Paul Polman and even Sir Martin Sorrell at WPP helped save the most historically important & sustainable company in the world: UNILEVER. And now I want to work with CEO Paul Polman and CMO Keith Weed to communicate the importance of The Sustainable Living Plan to investment managers around the globe. When we look back on business history, I believe we will see this as a KEY turning point for shareholders, consumers & employees. And I look forward to many more years ahead for Unilever’s highly talented CEO Paul Polman who was successful in fending off a takeover in record time with a little help from the many people who believe in him. Watch my video for the EXCITING STORY: Paul, let’s take everyone from Sustainable to Flourishing!

How would you feel if CEOs told you & your family How to Vote? For me, it is an alarming trend.

UPDATE: After this post, CEOs have cut back on telling employees and customers how to vote, so Sandra is buying Unilever’s TRESemme and Dove products again 🙂

I read a post in Harvard Business Review about concerns with CEOs trying to influence how people vote  There is even a PR research study on it. (Update: since this post there are articles in The Washington Post & the Naples Daily News on why “Consumers aren’t buying CEO Politics”). To me Politics, Business & Religion are three very different realms, and they should not tell each other what to do. I am very concerned by a trend I am seeing among a handful of mostly male Davos CEOs and today, on the day that the UK Votes on #Brexit I am speaking up. The Economist had a cover post recently about how people’s Freedom of Speech is under attack (even on social media) and how it is time to speak up. It is one thing if a CEO is asked by an employee or friend what their view is on a political or religious topic. It is quite another for CEOs to be tweeting or appearing in front of the media and telling employees and customers how to vote (one American banker threatened to take jobs away from the UK if they voted #Brexit and a California CEO has bullied US Governors, a female University President & NC’s Moms). Women executives have asked me to discuss this topic. WATCH my BREXIT VIDEO to UK-based Unilever CEO (he is one of my favorite CEOs but even he’s been tweeting how to vote on Brexit to his employees & customers (70% Women). They own Lever, Lipton, Dove, Axe, Hellmann’s & TreSemme. I highlight 5 Things people might want to know about Democracy. For the time being, I won’t be able to use their products as much as I really like his work on sustainability. It goes against my conscience. CLICK TO VIEW:

The Davos Woman Challenge is now THE DAVOS CEO PLEDGE for 2017. Anchoring this Pledge, I am asking my favorite Davos CEOs to commit to bring two or more female delegates to World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in January 2017 and to ask other CEOs to follow their lead (note: they must have a minimum 30% Female Delegates if their company brings extra delegates). I am also asking all Female CEOs to bring at least one other female delegate (a must have). With these actions and inviting more Women Leaders age 45+, I believe we will all achieve 30% Women at World Economic Forum very quickly. I am really excited World Economic Forum achieved a record 50% female Co-Chairs in January 2016 and many thanks all to my Davos Challenge Award Winners who invited female delegates to Davos 2016 (watch video for details). It am delighted to announce THE DAVOS CEO CHALLENGE Award Winners for 2016. I also have a special announcement which is: The Davos Challenge will now become THE DAVOS CEO PLEDGE for 2016-2017. This has always been my goal on how we will inspire other CEOs. Anchoring this Pledge, I am asking CEOs to commit to bring two or more female delegates to World Economic Forum 2017 and to ask other CEOs to follow their lead. I am also asking all Female CEOs to bring at least one other female delegate (a must have). With these two actions, I believe that within three years, we will achieve 30% Women at World Economic Forum. I was really excited that World Economic Forum had for the first time 3 of 6 Female Co-Chairs this year (a record 50% Women)! Many thanks to my CEOs, FT Alphaville, WSJ, Fast Company, Forbes as well as my favorite Thinkers 50 colleagues as I put my heart & soul into this project over the last two plus years. My Davos CEO Challenge 2016 was to five of my Favorite CEOs (data at Quartz website).

Coca Cola: 2 Female Delegates of 5 =40% Women (more than his major competitor and up from 0 last year) Many thanks Muhtar Kent!

WPP Group: 1 Female Delegate of 2 for parent co. = 50% Women (Sir Martin Sorrell my favorite Math Man)!

Citigroup: 1 Female Delegate, but Michael Corbat had 2 Female Delegates in 2015 as previous winner!

Unilever: 1 Female Delegate, but Paul Polman gets Honorary Award as he appointed two women to his CEO team during the Challenge, so he is likely to have more Doves at Davos next year. Many thanks Paul!

Since Virgin didn’t list any delegates, we’re adding Bank of America4 Female Delegates of 7 = 57% Women! Way to go Brian Moynihan. And Sir Richard I’d love your support on the CEO Pledge.

The most important thing I learned from this Challenge: sometimes CEOs surprise you, but above all feelings count for both men & women. While I believe the talent is available for 30% Women at Davos, I think there are some ongoing myths about Women in Business Leadership. So I initiated a creative “Cannes Lions” strategy this year (with pretty dresses) to help “rebrand” the Look & Feel of Leadership asking: What Does Leadership Look Like to You? In my 20+ years of global executive search & executive coaching experience, I don’t believe home issues are holding back executive-level appointments for women in business at the larger companies. Executive women have high incomes to hire help and many have older children or no children (not one of my Fortune 100 clients has ever mentioned this as their obstacle). I also don’t think women need to be more aggressive or less feminine. Indeed if anything the world has too much masculine energy! We see war looming and the highest economic inequality: these things will only be solved by what I call The Yin & Yang of Leadership. Inclusion now makes companies more profitable and helps avoid risky decisions. There was only one CEO, not in the challenge, who got upset with me when I asked the WSJ why he had only one woman on his CEO Team, but soon after he was sending his male executives to be counseled on that topic!

The world needs more Executive Women and baby boomer Female Founders at Davos (because 90% of US Female Founders – the most educated talent on the planet- are oddly one person companies). We need some creative brainstorming. While I couldn’t sleep for three nights when I saw the 18% overall Women in attendance at Davos, I rest better knowing I have five plus heroes here. CEOs & CHROs, I coach Executive Teams on Leadership, Talent Acquisition, Executive Communication, and Inclusive Advertising. I am currently working with a Silicon Valley CEO and coaching three men and women on his team. After donating six figures of video time, I do need more executive coaching work now. I will also be launching my 1st DVD/Video on Amazon on How to Navigate a 21st Century Career for my Viewers in 65 Countries. I am honored to have you watching. PS CEOs: You might see me in more suits now, but with the help of Paul Polman, Sir Martin & my other CEOs, there will be a lot more Doves descending upon Davos. I could have never achieved all of this without all of you! Yin/Yang.

Final Thoughts:

Let’s call it Gender Parity. We need more positive (and feminine) energy. Indeed the World Economic Forum tweeted a survey that key skills for 2020 include Creativity, Emotional Intelligence, and Critical Thinking skills. I couldn’t agree more as my history/arts degree is to me as valuable as my Kellogg MBA. Special Thanks to Paul Murphy at the Financial Times who has three daughters and has followed my videos, as well as to Don Tapscott, Bill George & Tom Peters.

What Does Leadership Look Like to You? Inspired by Athena, the helper of heroes & heroines and her former boss who created Entertainment Tonight, Executive/Anchor Sandra Rupp created The Five Questions to Davos CEO Series on Smart TV. The future of women rests on their heroic shoulders.

I have asked five key companies to add women to their Davos Delegate Teams for the DAVOS CEO CHALLENGE. I am now delivering results: I had previously filmed Five Questions to Sir Martin & Muhtar Kent. CEO @CocaCola is bringing two female delegates to Davos (a sure winner for 2016) and WPP is on board with a new female delegate (with Sir Martin and one other WPP delegate listed that’s actually 50% Women for WPP parent company: Impressive way to bring the % up but he is a Math Man). We also have 50% Female Chairs this year! CEO @Citi brought two women last year. We will be watching for the final number from Unilever CEO who is well known for The Sustainable Living Plan  & his impressive work on UN Global GoalsQUOTE: “Our brands are 80% there to serve women.” CEO Paul Polman

The shocking news is the current estimate for overall percentage of Davos Women is only 18%. We really need the 5 Davos Challenge CEOs to be our heroes and work with me on this project. My concern is many women can’t sleep at night, because over 100 Million Western Women in all age groups and many more around the globe don’t have Jobs, Opportunities or Angel Investors. We are not leveraging the talent of some or our most educated Western Women! This is the REASON I am working diligently and creatively on getting 30% Women to Davos (40% of my top school MBA class was women many years ago).  In one last #ThinkPink Athena-inspired shot at getting more Doves to Davos, here are 5 Questions for Unilever CEO. With gratitude, Sandra Rupp, Executive & Anchor www.parthenonadvisors.com

Advice to all CEOs: What Does Leadership Look Like to You? Please call it Gender Parity (positive energy) not the Gender Gap. Don’t expect women leaders to be like men (some like yoga & fashion more than sports. Yes I’ve hit a hole in one, won a skeet tourney & helped get Women into Augusta, but my main interests are global business, digital media, and helping others). Hoping for a miracle in getting more CEOs to invite Women @Davos. I am happy to work on executive coaching & media projects for your companies or organizations.

LEADERS, I am excited to share a brand New Davos Woman Challenge  2016 with my Favorite Davos CEOs. I am asking them to “Trade Places” for one day with a CEO Female Founder age 45+ with a Top School MBA & interview with me on camera. Yes I plan to choose a seasoned Harvard MBA Alum for WPP CEO Sir Martin Sorrell! I want to choose myself for Unilever CEO Paul Polman as I have the marketing Kellogg MBA and know a lot about his amazing Sustainable Living Plan. We will find a super creative Stanford MBA Alum for Virgin CEO Sir Richard Branson, and we need a charismatic Cass B-School Alum for Coca Cola CEO Muhtar Kent. I have a smart Wharton finance Alum for Citi CEO Michael Corbat; after all he won The Davos Woman Challenge last year by bringing two female delegates to World Economic Forum. Davos CEOs are all cordially invited to interview with me on camera, sponsor the process & even make the final edits. With so many talented baby boomer ladies available with a mix of Corporate & CEO Founder experience, I figure my Davos CEOs will be extending offers to join their CEO Teams after just one day. Conscious Capitalism

Today we discuss what two of my Favorite CEOs (Paul Polman and Donald Trump) have in common, and how I helped Unilever CEO @PaulPolman through the magic of Twitter & YouTube. Recently, a Viral Video with Sofia Ashraf hit social media questioning Unilever’s India division HUL. Sofia used to work for @Ogilvy India. The Kodaikanal Mercury issue happened in 2001, long before Paul joined Unilever, and in my view should have been solved by the prior CEO. But I saw this starting to brew on social media weeks ago and alerted @Unilever. They issued a Unilever Human Rights Report, but I knew I was going to have to get on YouTube and Twitter myself to help. After all, Unilever is the leader in Sustainability! Many thanks to @nityanandjraman who helped me and Paul sort out what happened in Kodai, India. For several days, Paul & I were the ones brave enough to tweet. I tweeted to @Bill_George, @DTapscott, @Pontifex, @FT & @TheTimes we all needed to help, because no one is going to hurt Paul Polman on my watch! He is one of my Favorite Davos CEOs.  Dear @HUL_News you might want to follow my advice & take down your Pinned Tweet. Check out my video here. It turns out Paul & Donald have a few things in common, including being CEOs I’d like to work for! After my video and Paul’s tweets of reassurance to the people of Kodai, I have got nice notes from Kodai asking Paul and even me to come visit:

LEADERS In my second video for BILDERBERG, I invite World Leaders to interview on my Smart TV show “Conscious Capitalism Meets ET.” We now have viewers from around the world, and I am honored to invite Bilderberg business, political & media leaders to interview with me (using Chatham House Rule – see video below & prior post).

The Bilderberg Meetings were in the Austrian Alps from June 11-14th (I am suggesting Naples, Florida as a possible location for next year so I can attend). The 2015 attendee list at their website (click to view) includes 140 leaders, including the Chair & CEO of Axa as well as the Chair of Google (owner of YouTube). Royalty also attended, so I wore a special red evening gown here. We hear Bilderberg organizers are happy about the interest in their conference, and we want to make sure Bilderberg participants feel heard. Topics can be found here (click). WATCH MY VIDEO INVITE:

UPDATE: Soon after this post, Unilever’s CEO @PaulPolman joined Twitter, modified his website & can now read Sandra’s Tweets He added another lady to his CEO Team.

“What message is new Dove Ad really sending to our daughters?” Telegraph

“Dove’s ‘Beautiful or Average’ Ad: does it do more harm than good?” ETonline

“Dove is Really Reaching with this New Stunt that Forces Women to Label Themselves ‘Average’ or ‘Beautiful'” Fast Company magazine (click to view)

BOTTOM LINE: I have talked openly about how much I admire Unilever’a Sustainable Living Plan. But when I am appointed to his CEO Team, I will have more choices for Dove doors: including Kind-Hearted, Feminine & Fearless. Dear Ad Age & Sir Martin: he needs a female Chief Creative for Dove. The one positive thing about the Ad was they took my advice & filmed women around the globe! Here’s my new video offering to work with Paul as Chief Creative Advisor on Dove & other brands. Click to View:

Dove has Women Walk through Doors Labeled ‘Beautiful’ or ‘Average’….” Beauty Editor Arabelle Sicardi of BuzzFeed

Dove’s New Choose Beautiful Ad Sparks Online Backlash.” Nicole Arce in Tech Times

ORIGINAL POST: Just imagine this scenario: a male CMO & male SVP of Brand, a male Chief Creative Officer, and even male Directors of an Ad Agency hatch a plan to have the Ad Team fly to five cities and film women walking into office buildings or malls for a female soap product. But first they plan to put up two huge signs: on top of Door #1 is a sign that says BEAUTIFUL. On top of Door #2 is the sign AVERAGE. And then they film the majority of the women walking through the AVERAGE Door! Wow you can’t even make this stuff up…I really need to help CEO Paul Polman promote the positive self-esteem in his Sustainable Living Plan. As some of you know, I helped him clean up the Axe Ads (see all Videos to CEO Unilever on YouTube), but now I’d like him to hire me to give Dove a Creative Makeover. As I pointed out in my prior Dove post, Beautiful is a man’s word (click to see more). But there’s more that Unilever’s CEO needs to know: the BuzzFeed Beauty Editor mysteriously had her critical Dove post temporarily deleted – and then restored when BuzzFeed’s Editor-in-Chief admits he blew it after a Slate article. So why did he temporarily delete the post? Last time I checked PR Firm Edelman had been contacted, but there was no comment – Richard & Sir Martin please give me a call. Because I suspect Paul will be siding with me – because top women Execs, Journalists & customers are worn out being told we have to think like men. Calgon take me away ~

QUOTE: One of the first things I learned in Business School is to go where the power is.” Sandra Rupp, Executive Coach & Media Presenter

LEADERS it is with great pleasure that I thank one of the key people who inspired my Davos Woman CEO Challenge: I had the good fortune to hear Warren Buffett speak at the Fortune Women’s Most Powerful Conference several year ago. He actually helped my father find a CEO job in the 1970s. I have admired Warren Buffett over many years not just for his business success, but also for his upbeat, positive personality. In my new video I reveal how he inspired me and how Silicon Valley CEOs, @FTAlphaville and @WSJ are helping too. As many of you know I am now inviting all CEOs to appoint 30%+ women to their CEO Teams, bring two ladies to Davos & interview with me on camera on the topic of Women & Leadership. Maybe then we can even get the legendary Warren Buffett to attend Davos! I also would love to work with WEF to create a New Category for more Women Age 45+ to attend World Economic Forum. Watch my NEW VIDEO & many thanks to all supporting me:

“What I’m most excited about technology is that it gives women a voice.” @PaulPolman Unilever CEO (which owns Dove)

“Paul Polman is handsome & intelligent, but he needs more  Women on his CEO ULE Team. #SpeakBeautiful” @ExecCareerCoach (update: he now has more)

Happy Women’s Day. While I know Unilever had good intentions, I am surprised they singled out women in their #SpeakBeautiful campaign (note: Dove has a men’s care line too). As soon as it hit Twitter I tweeted back to PR CEO Richard Edelman on Oscar’s Day “Please tell Paul…They can do better.” In this video I explain to CMO Keith Weed & Dove SVP Stephen Miles why I think it’s time to drop the word “Beauty” from the Dove campaign, revamp it with something fresh & positive, and even use this as an opportunity to hire more Women Executives. As some of you know Paul is one of my five favorite Davos CEOs, and I helped him clean up the Axe & Lynx Ads through my prior videos – I love Clean Cut and Axe Peace But Unilever needs my help again as I read these headlines:

“Dove’s #SpeakBeautiful campaign is the ugliest thing on the internet today.” Caitlin Dewey in Washington Post

“Is Dove’s #SpeakBeautiful Twitter Campaign an ‘Egregious Overstep’?” headline in Ad Age

My Question for Dove: By pointing out something negative about women are you really raising their self esteem? #SustLiving

“Our brands are 80% there to serve women.” CEO Unilever to Davos “The era of women is coming.”

Note to Paul: the era of women leaders is here! P&G has many Women on their CEO Team. I volunteer to be your Chief Creative Consultant & here’s my idea for Dove to lead the way across the Consumer Goods, Advertising & PR world to #PaintItPurple & be the hero. Watch:

I am delighted to announce the WINNER of The Davos CEO Challenge for 2015. I am very excited to honor the CEO of Michael Corbat with this award. I had previously done many years of executive search work with Citigroup, and I had tweeted @Citi that he needs more women on his CEO Team. Michael added a woman to his team & he brought two lady delegates to Davos as we requested. Many thanks Michael Corbat for leading the way and spearheading “The New Global Context” with us. Many thanks Financial Times & Fast Company readers for helping me select my wardrobe (see prior post).
